About Us/Me

Hi! We're Meg and Jake. We've been together for a little over 10 years. Over the years we've both had a number of hobbies and interests - many of which involve creativity and working with people.

Jake has been a massage therapist for 16 years and made a career change to information technology in 2019. He has always been interested in "real life" puzzles - how things work and how they could possibly work better. His workshop is filled with all kinds of objects, parts and pieces. He's worked with puppet makers in Columbus to build and choreograph movements for 18' puppets for parades and fairs in our area. He volunteers for local non-profit organizations focused on social justice and is always the first to volunteer to help someone move.

Meg previously worked in group homes and residential centers before she started working with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities at children's hospital and eventually became a social worker for the same department. She has previously been involved in hosting and competing in the slam poetry scene in Columbus (That feels like it was a lifetime ago!). She's a self described "maker" and has dabbled in embroidery but in the last few years has dove into pottery. She and Jake are working on creating a home pottery studio.

There are so many important things we want you to know about us (and we're sure there's more that you'd like to know that we haven't shared) but one of the most important things we want to share about is our community. We have some incredibly amazing people in our lives who have no relation to us other than the fact that we consistently choose each other every day - through thick and thin and for that, we call them our chosen family. They have been supportive of our adoption experience, curious about why we chose so adamantly to work with Choice Network and they are already so ready to fall in love with our child and their first family. We would be lost without them and are so grateful to have such a loving and welcoming support system.

About You

Adoption has always been a part of our story. When Meg was younger she was told the story of her grandfather, Pete, who was dropped off at an orphanage at 4yo. He was placed into foster care and abused by many foster families. He ended up lying about his age at 16yo and joined the Army with a 3rd grade education. Pete found family in the Army and was deeply committed to the family he built with his wife, children and their community. From an early age, Meg developed an understanding that choosing to wake up every day and love the people in your life is what makes a family. She has always felt adoption would be part of her story. Jake has been on board from day one.

Over time, our understanding of what "adoption being part of our story" meant has evolved. We've learned from adoptees and birth families. We reflected on what adoption means to us. Ultimately, open adoption and adopting through an organization like JustChoice that honors and supports birth parents first and foremost became an essential. Adoption means growth. It means building a larger table so everyone has a seat and turning the volume of our own voices down so everyone has the chance to be heard.
